Who are we to argue on what is classic and what is an acceptable modern twist on a traditional cocktail. OK, OK, we know a classic martini calls for gin, but the botanical goodness of gin isn’t always to everyone’s liking.
We are rather partial to a vodka martini at times too with a twist (lemon that is, not the ingredients!). Keep on reading to find out how to add this simple but sophisticated cocktail to your repertoire.

Vodka Martini
A modern twist on an old classic but incredibly popular, vodka substitutes gin and lemon can replace the saltiness of lime for more citrus hues than salty olives.
- Total Time: 3 minutes
- Yield: 1 serve 1x
Ingredients
- 60ml Vodka
- 25ml Dry Vermouth
- Optional lemon twist to Garnish
Instructions
- Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker and fill with ice
- Shake well
- Strain into chilled cocktail glasses
- (Optional) garnish with a twist of lemon
Notes
You can adjust the quantity of Vermouth to your flavour preferences. Remembering that Vodka is the predominant ingredient, you will want to choose a quality brand such as Kettle One or Grey Goose.

Variants on the vodka martini
The obvious link in the classic gin martini, with it’s more delicate botanic flavours. We also enjoy an espresso martini and a flat white martini which work better with vodka than gin. A daring extra step is the Blue Martini.
Lemon or Olives?
This is really a personal preference, the classic martini calls for an olive stick in the glass, but with the vodka variant, we prefer the citrus finish. Another option is to also add a few drops of bitters for a simple twist.
